Background

When he moved into his home in North Norfolk 16 months ago, part of the property was a conservatory, which made the space cold and difficult to heat. Even after improvements, the home still required high heating use during winter.

Assessment

Kevin applied for a funded scheme through the council after his cousin told him about it. A survey was carried out to assess the property and check its EPC rating. This helped determine eligibility and identify suitable improvements for the home.

Challenges

Kevin did not expect to qualify for funding and was surprised to be accepted onto the scheme. At the time, it was unclear whether his circumstances would meet the criteria, which initially made him unsure about applying.

The home also presented challenges. Despite converting a cold conservatory into a warmer living space, the property still required high levels of heating during winter to stay comfortable, increasing energy use and costs.

Adjusting to new systems and understanding how to get the most from them also took some time, particularly when combining multiple improvements such as solar panels, battery storage and insulation.

Solutions

Through the funded scheme, Kevin had a range of improvements installed to work together. This included eight solar panels, a battery storage system, loft insulation upgraded to current standards, and added ventilation through trickle vents in the windows.

The process was straightforward, beginning with an application and followed by a home survey to assess suitability. Once approved, installation work began within a few weeks, progressing efficiently through each stage.

The combination of measures was designed to improve how the home retains heat while also generating and storing electricity. This allows Kevin to make better use of energy throughout the day and reduce reliance on external supply.

Results

Kevin started noticing the difference almost straight away. He now regularly checks the app to see what the system is generating and how much electricity the house is using, something he didn’t do before.

The setup has changed how he uses energy day to day. He now charges the battery overnight using cheaper electricity and uses that stored power during the day. At the same time, he is beginning to export some electricity back to the grid, already bringing in a small return each week.

Even within the first few months, the changes are clear. With summer ahead, Kevin is already thinking about how he can rely more on solar energy, including using it to heat water, to reduce his bills further.
