Chris cuts bills with solar and storage

Chris installed solar panels, battery storage and ventilation through a funded scheme, reducing his energy bills and giving him greater control over how he uses and manages energy at home.

“My utility bills have come down quite remarkably, and I can see what I’m generating and using on the app.”

Chris, Homeowner

Background

Chris has lived in his home in North Norfolk for nearly nine years. While he enjoyed the property and location, rising energy costs became a growing concern. With an interest in sustainability, he also wanted to reduce his environmental impact.

Assessment

Chris explored a funded scheme offering home energy improvements. After applying, his home was assessed through surveys and checks to confirm suitability for solar panels, battery storage and ventilation. The process helped identify the right measures.

Challenges

Initially, Chris was sceptical about whether the improvements would deliver the benefits promised. Like many homeowners, it seemed almost too good to be true, particularly as the work was fully funded. There was uncertainty around whether there might be hidden costs or complications during the process.

Timing also presented a challenge, as Chris was unwell when the process began. Despite this, he needed to complete application forms and manage communication with the council and installers. Access to equipment such as a scanner was limited, requiring him to find alternative ways to submit documents.

There can also be concerns around how disruptive installation work might be, particularly with scaffolding and multiple stages involved.

Solutions

Through the scheme, Chris had solar panels installed on his roof, supported by a battery storage system and ventilation improvements. An energy management system was also included, allowing him to monitor generation, usage and exports through an app on his phone.

The process was straightforward and well organised. After applying, an EPC assessment and property survey were carried out within weeks to confirm suitability. Installation followed soon after, beginning with scaffolding and then the system installation itself.

Clear communication from the council and installers helped ensure each stage ran smoothly, with the full process completed over a short timeframe.

Results

Since the installation, Chris has seen a clear reduction in his energy bills. Monthly costs for gas and electricity have dropped from around £80–£90 to approximately £47, making a noticeable difference to household expenses.

The system has also given him greater confidence in how he uses energy. With battery storage in place, he can run appliances or heating when needed, knowing he is using stored electricity. This has reduced previous concerns about switching heating on.

The ability to track energy use through an app has increased awareness of generation and consumption, helping him make more informed decisions. Overall, the improvements have created a more efficient home with lower costs and greater control over energy use.
